Event to hold a bridge of peace event to promote healing of pain and inequality caused by
misdeeds during Denmark’s colonization of Greenland. To help appreciate the culture
of the Greenlandic people. Creating friendship on the grass roots level between native
Danes and native Greenlanders.
Thirty participants engaged in the bridge of peace event, and the Greenlandic House in
Copenhagen kindly gave us the space for free to use for this event, due to its relevance.
We had a native Greenlander tell of her life experiences both in Greenland where she
was born and in Denmark, and other Greenlanders who participated. One young woman
did a dance to personally authored poetry to demonstrate her experience of being
caught between two cultures (her mother is from northern Greenland and her father is
Danish), and her mother did a ceremonial lighting of the traditional Greenlandic lamp
which burns whale or animal fat and gives heat, light and cooking fire in Greenland. The
program included a bridge ceremony in which pairs of Danes and Greenlanders crossed
the bridge to embrace each other in friendship.
